As the demand for flexible, accessible education grows, higher education faces unprecedented challenges with evolving technologies and learner and employer needs. This event explores how courageous leadership can guide institutions towards innovation and continued relevance. Join us as we delve into strategies for embracing change, fostering creativity, and developing forward-thinking approaches to online and continuing education that meet the evolving needs of learners and society.
Hosted by the LSU Online & Continuing Education (OCE) team, the “Innovation Series” provides the LSU community with opportunities to initiate conversations through exploring new developments, trends, and best practices in the realm of online and continuing education. These events aim to:
- promote a culture of innovation and transformational change
- explore and discuss trends in higher education and their impact on LSU
- ensure the delivery of quality online educational experiences that meet our learners' expectations
Our upcoming Innovation Series event is scheduled for Monday, February 24th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the LSU Lod Cook Conference Center (opens in new tab) . Per popular demand, the event will also offer the option for virtual attendance, as it will be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person. If you'd like to attend virtually, you must register to receive the Zoom link, which will be provided prior to the event.

2025 Spring Innovation Series Speakers
Jeff Maggioncalda
CEO, Coursera
Jeff Maggioncalda joined Coursera as CEO in June 2017 and since then helped the company grow to over 100 million learners and 7,000+ institutions, served by high-quality learning content from 300+ of the world’s top universities and industry educators. He previously served for 18 years as the founding CEO at Financial Engines Inc, a company co-founded by economist and Nobel Prize winner William Sharpe. Financial Engines grew rapidly under Jeff's leadership, providing high-quality online investment advice that has helped millions of people save and prepare for retirement. Jeff has also worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company and Cornerstone Research, and serves as a director of SVB Financial Group. He holds an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor's degree in Economics and English from Stanford University. In his free time, Jeff is a lifelong learner and proud dad, and enjoys studying music theory and spending time with his wife and three daughters.
Dr. Jill Buban
Higher Education Innovation and Online Leader
Dr. Jill Buban’s career focus has been on increasing access and opportunity for adult, working learners at scale, as evident by her roles at institutions, non-profits, corporations, and as a consultant. Jill’s passion for adult learner success is evident in the solutions created at EdAssist that provided education opportunities to nearly half a million learners every year, meeting the needs of the current and future workforce.
Previous to EdAssist, Jill served as the Vice President for Digital Strategy and Online Education at Fairfield University, bringing 21 programs online in a year. She oversaw strategic development, infrastructure and programming with a particular focus on graduate and professional studies.
Prior to her time at Fairfield, Buban served in leadership roles at two national organizations, the Unizin Consortium and the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). At Unizin, she served as the chief academic officer, overseeing the organization’s research activities, member and partner engagement, and acting as the liaison for Unizin’s robust teaching and learning committee. At OLC, Jill served as the senior director of Research and Innovation for the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). In this role, she founded and oversaw the OLC Research Center for Digital Learning and Leadership, worked on key strategic leadership initiatives for digital learning leaders, and oversaw the organization’s peer-reviewed journal, Online Learning. While at OLC, Buban lectured nationally and internationally on research in online, blended, and digital learning; innovation in higher education; and best practices for implementing online and blended programs at
Buban has held positions at for-profit and state institutions. At Post University, she was the assistant provost for Research and Innovation and oversaw all aspects of digital learning initiatives, including the transition of 500+ courses to eBooks, digital courseware, and open education resources (OER); creating and launching an online school for high school students; and instituting credit hour and regular and substantive policies for the institution. While at Post, Buban previously served as the dean of the School of Education and the academic program manager for the Master of Education program. Her career in online and distance learning began in Academic Affairs at SUNY Empire State College (ESC).
As a higher education thought leader, Buban speaks on many campuses, at a variety of conferences, and serves on multiple advisory boards. A collaborator with organizations such as APLU, Educause, WCET, NC-SARA, and Quality Matters on topics that are pertinent to the distance learning field, Buban is also a member of the higher education board of directors for IMS Global, and has served on the senior leadership team for the Association of Chief Academic Officers (ACAO) Digital Fellows, and the National University Technology Networks (NUTN) board of directors. Currently, Buban serves on the editorial board of the international journal, Educational Technology in Higher Education (ETHE).
Buban earned her PhD in Educational Studies with a Specialization in Adult Learning from Lesley University. She holds an MS in Curriculum and Instruction from State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, and a BA in History from the University of New Hampshire.
Awards earned for her accomplishments include being named a Top 100 Influencer in EdTech by Ed Tech Digest, a member of the 2017 Class of OLC Fellows, Best in Track Award from Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning (2011), Emerging Scholar for the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood (2012), and the Hartford Business Journal 40 under 40 achievement (2014).

Charles Berryman, PhD
Chair of the Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management, LSU
Dr. Charles (Chuck) Berryman has served 37 years in various, and sometimes concurrent, administrative roles for academia, professional organizations, and the construction industry. He is author and/or co-author of 40+ published manuscripts and involved in approximately $21.1 million in research as PI or Co-PI.
Dr. Berryman has been Chair of the Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management in the College of Engineering at LSU since 2012. He also holds an endowed chair position, the Chair of the Construction Education Trust Fund Professorship. He has developed multiple academic degree programs (campus and online) during his career. His research interests involve material science, transportation, construction education and green technologies. Major research funding sources include sources have included the Mid America Transportation Institute, National Association of Home Builders, Associated General Contractors (AGC), US Department of Labor, US Department of Transportation (DOT), US Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Department of Commerce (DOC). He is a past President of the International Associated Schools of Construction and a former member of their Board of Directors. He has received both of their Outstanding Researcher and Educator Awards. He is a lifetime member of the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), former member of their Board of Trustees and the current committee chair for their accreditation Standards. He also chairs ACCE visiting teams during campus visits. He is an active member the American Institute of Constructors (AIC), is an AIC Certified Professional Constructor (#1087), currently serves as member of their Board of Trustees and Exam Commission. In addition, he was recently elected into their College of Fellows.
Paul D. Coreil, PhD
Chancellor, LSU of Alexandria
Dr. Paul D. Coreil was appointed Interim Chancellor of LSU of Alexandria effective June 1, 2019 then Chancellor in October of 2019. He previously served as the LSUA Interim Chancellor from February, 2013-February, 2014.
His focus at LSUA has been on the development and implementation of a major LSUA Marketing Plan devoted to increasing university visibility, student enrollment, student retention, graduation rates and upon graduation - student career success.
Prior to his LSUA appointment in 2013, he served in the position of Vice Chancellor of the LSU Agricultural Center and Director of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES), a position he held from September, 2001-February, 2013 when he officially retired and was named LCES Director, Vice Chancellor and Professor Emeritus by the LSU Board of Supervisors soon thereafter. He has also served in several previous positions within the LSU Agricultural Center, beginning his Extension career as a Sea Grant Assistant Area Agent in Fisheries and Wildlife for Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes in 1978. He also served as Parish Chair of the Cameron Parish Extension Service office from 1987-1992.
Dr. Coreil received his Bachelors of Science in Zoology from the University of Southwestern Louisiana; both his Master’s Degree (in Wildlife Management) and PhD (in Extension Education) are from Louisiana State University. The recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Coreil received the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana’s Coastal Stewardship (Professional Category) Award, the LSU AgCenter Chancellor's Diversity Leadership Award and the Association of Southern Region Extension Directors (ASRED) Excellence in Leadership Award. He currently serves on the Louisiana 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees and is a past member of the Board for the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. He was also inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame in 2015 and into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2022, Dr. Coreil was inducted in to the Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction.
Dr. Coreil was born and raised in Ville Platte, Louisiana and has been married to Arlene Pitre Coreil, also from Ville Platte, for 50 years. Paul is an avid hunter and fisherman, spending as much of his free time at his lake house on Lake St. John in Concordia Parish. He enjoys volunteering for his church, supporting conservation and youth development related programs, and LSUA fundraising across the state.
Missy Hopson, PhD
SVP Chief Learning and Workforce Development Officer, Ochsner Health System
Dr. Hopson serves as SVP - Chief Learning and Workforce Development Officer at Ochsner Health System. She leads her team in developing a diverse talent pipeline to support top quality patient care across the Gulf South. She has established an effective workforce development platform to grow the pipeline of healthcare professionals through Ochsner-sponsored training programs for internal and external candidates with a focus on underrepresented groups in healthcare and opening early pathways through dual enrollment and high school pre-apprenticeship programs. She partners with her team to advance talent strategies for learning and professional development, college and post-graduate internships and fellowships, orientation & onboarding, coaching & mentoring, and leader development.
She serves on the Workforce Development Boards of Orleans (Vice-Chair); YouthForce NOLA; New Orleans Career Center; Dress for Success New Orleans; Morris Jeff Community School as well as co-leads the workforce and education committee of Ellevate Louisiana. She most recently has been appointed to the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Industry-Based Certification (IBC) Council as well as the LCTCS Foundation Board.
Jill C Trepanier, PhD
Professor and Department Chair Geography and Anthropology, LSU
Dr. Trepanier earned her B.A. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2007), a M.S. in Geography from Florida State University (2009), and a Ph.D. in Geography from Florida State University (2012). She is currently the Department Chair and a Professor in the Geography and Anthropology Department at Louisiana State University. Research interests include understanding extreme weather events (with a focus on tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico), tropical climatology, climate change, geographic information systems, risk assessment, and statistical methods. Ongoing research investigates climate change influences to galleries, libraries, archives, and museums; climate change impacts to local farm shareholders; climate change impacts to Native American cultural resources in the Gulf of Mexico; and K-12 education on climate science and extreme weather through a growing weather station network.
