Known Issue: Gradebook Category Set to Zero Using Natural Aggregation
Originally posted: September 15, 2025
Issue Summary:
Setting a gradebook category to zero while using the Natural aggregation method in Moodle causes "divide by zero" errors. This affects tools such as Projected Grades and the Academic Center for Student Athletes.
Workaround:
Switch the affected gradebook category to Custom Weights aggregation and set its weight to zero. This will exclude the category from final grade calculations without triggering errors.
Implications of Workaround:
Using Custom Weights and setting the category weight to zero maintains gradebook integrity and ensures all grade calculation tools function correctly.
Known Issue: Concurrent Use of Moodle in the Classroom (Quizzes)
Originally posted: September 12, 2025
Issue Summary:
When administering Moodle quizzes in a face-to-face class where students are required to take the quiz at the same time, Moodle server resources are strained, which can result in connectivity issues or delays for students. This is especially problematic during high-traffic periods on the Moodle server, when large numbers of students are required to access quizzes simultaneously from their classrooms.
Recommended Alternatives:
- Avoid concurrent in-class quizzes. Instead of requiring students to log in to Moodle at the same time, offer a wider quiz window outside of class time to reduce peak Moodle server load. You can still set a time limit for each attempt, but avoid very short limits (for example, fewer than 5 minutes), as this can increase risk of interruption from connectivity issues.
- If you do administer in-class Moodle assessments, use external assessment platforms such as PointSolutions, Gradescope, or Questionmark (through the LSU Testing Center). These platforms are built to support synchronous and high-volume testing, reducing the strain on Moodle’s servers and minimizing technical disruptions for students.
- Provide paper-based quizzes or exams during class and scan student responses. Gradescope can then be used to automate grading and streamline feedback, supporting both efficiency and accuracy in grading even for larger courses.
LSU Action:
If you want advice on external tool options, please contact the Faculty Technology Center. Support is available to help faculty optimize testing practices and resolve technical issues.
Thank you for helping to maintain a stable and dependable Moodle environment for all users.
Known Issue: Maximum Grade Set to Zero (0) in Moodle Gradebook
Originally posted: September 10, 2025
Issue Summary:
Setting a grade item’s maximum grade to zero causes divide by zero errors in Moodle tools such as Projected Grades and the Academic Center for Student Athletes Block.
Workaround:
- Set the maximum grade for any non-graded item greater than zero (e.g., 1, 10, or 100).
- Place it in a gradebook category weighted to 0% so it does not affect the final grade.
For instructions on creating gradebook categories and weights, see the GROK article Moodle: Gradebook: Creating Categories (opens in new tab) .
LSU Action:
The Moodle team is contacting instructors of affected active courses and correcting these gradebook items.
Known Issue: Feedback Activity - No Edit Question in Snap Theme
Originally posted: June 12, 2025
Issue summary:
In the Snap theme, the Feedback activity in Moodle does not present an option to edit questions. This limitation prevents users from modifying Feedback activity questions while the Snap theme is active.
Workaround:
To edit questions in the Feedback activity, temporarily change the course theme from Snap to Boost. Make the necessary edits to the questions, then switch the course theme back to Snap. It is recommended to work with the Faculty Technology Center to complete this workaround.
Implications of workaround:
Switching between themes requires additional steps and temporary changes to course appearance and navigation. Users may need support or administrative permissions to change themes, and brief disruption to the course layout or student experience may occur during the transition period. Close coordination with the Faculty Technology Center helps to minimize potential issues.
Known Issue: Grading Scale Update
Originally posted: May 23, 2025
Issue summary:
The Workday Student integration with Moodle allows individual students in the same course section to be graded with different scales. This means that the overall course grade type (i.e., Value, Scale, Text) may be different from one or more students' grade type.
This causes an issue when posting grades to Workday if and only if the overall grade type is set to the Pass/Fail scale and there are students with different grade types in the course. For example, the overall grade type is set to Scale>Pass/Fail, and there are students with the Value grade type. In this scenario, attempting to post interim or final grades through Moodle will result in an error.
Workaround:
You will not be able to use the Post Grades tool in Moodle if the course's overall grade type in Moodle is set to Scale>Pass/Fail and there are students with different grade types in the course. In this case, you must set your overall grade type to Value. However, you may manually post grades to Workday Student with the combined grade types.
Implications of workaround:
To manually post grades to Workday Student, you must export grades from Moodle and import to Workday Student.
Known Issue: Board Activity Plugin
Originally posted: May 14, 2025 | Resolved: July 17, 2025
Issue summary:
The Board activity plugin is not visible for roles with the capability to Manage columns and manage all posts. Issue has been reported and is being addressed.
Temporary workaround:
We have temporarily removed the impacted capability to ensure boards are visible and posts can be created and viewed.
Implications of workaround:
- Users cannot edit column headers (Note: Column headers can still be hidden from students in the settings).
- Users cannot add, move, or delete columns.
- Existing column customizations will still import and restore into new courses without issues.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to resolve this matter. Thank you for your cooperation.
